Universal and equitable access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation, particularly for vulnerable populations, is essential for sustainable development. Thanks to the substantial progress made over the last decade, 90% of the world's population now has access to better sources of clean drinking water. Nevertheless, too many people, mainly children, still die every year from diseases associated with poor water supply. Achieving Goal 6 requires continued efforts to improve sanitation and access to clean drinking water, while promoting sustainable water management.

How can sport address this issue?

Hydration plays a key role in sports. Many athletes are currently involved in promoting access to clean drinking water.

Ensuring sustainable management of and safe access to drinking water is also a major challenge in the sports world, particularly for sports events organisers.

Given the measures that are being taken in preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the sports industry can be a source of innovative strategies for sustainable water resource management.

Sail for Water : promoting universal access to clean drinking water

The project led by the NGO Sail for Water, in partnership with the Arkema group, is the first round-the-world sailing tour for universal access to drinking water. The crew distributed filters to the populations most affected by unsafe water.
