Desertification and deforestation threaten terrestrial ecosystems, particularly forests. Yet forests fulfil key functions for human life, combating climate change, protecting biodiversity and providing habitat for indigenous peoples. Goal 15 calls for the protection and sustainable management of terrestrial ecosystems.

How can sport address this issue ?

Quality sports practice has always required access to a healthy natural environment. With the rise in outdoor sports in nature, the conservation of terrestrial spaces and ecosystems has become a major challenge for the sports world.

Based on the example of events labelled as “sustainable” or “zero waste” and initiatives combining sport and waste collection, the sports industry can be the source of innovative solutions for creating eco-friendly practices.

Sports events, and sports practice in general, provide a unique platform for raising public awareness from an early age about the importance and the challenges of protecting forests and mountainous areas.
