Sport is a powerful communication tool to promote messages of solidarity, respect for human rights, reconciliation and peace. Through her foundation and various initiatives combining sport and peace, former Kenyan athlete Tegla Loroupe has succeeded in bringing together members of warring tribes in Kenya.

Tegla Loroupe, the first African woman to win the prestigious New York City Marathon, set up the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation in 2003 to use her fame for the benefit of peace and Africa.

The foundation’s mission is to promote peaceful coexistence among warring communities in northern Kenya, South Sudan, north-eastern Uganda, Ethiopia and other areas of tension on the African continent.

Tegla Loroupe is a member of Champions for Peace, a group of more than 100 elite athletes created by the Monaco-based association Peace and Sport.
