Jointly published by AFD, the World Bank, the IOC and DBSA, this publication highlights how sport can drive economic, social and human development across Africa. It explores the opportunities and reforms needed to unlock the sector’s full contribution to sustainable growth.

“Unlocking the Potential of Sport in Africa” represents a significant contribution to the growing recognition of sport as a development tool. Developed by AFD, IOC and the World Bank together with key institutional partners, the publication provides a comprehensive assessment of the African sports ecosystem and its development opportunities.

One of the report’s central messages is that sport goes far beyond recreation and entertainment. It can improve health outcomes, strengthen educational achievements and foster social inclusion. The authors demonstrate how sport contributes to human capital development and supports stronger and more resilient communities.

The study also underlines the considerable economic opportunities associated with the sports sector. Africa’s young population, growing urbanization and rising demand for sports services create favorable conditions for investment. Infrastructure development, events, equipment and services can all contribute to job creation and economic diversification.

At the same time, the publication identifies important challenges that must be addressed. Limited infrastructure, unequal access to sport and governance weaknesses continue to constrain growth in many countries. The report advocates for inclusive policies and stronger institutions to ensure that sport benefits all segments of society.

As Dakar prepares to host the Youth Olympic Games 2026, the book provides valuable insights for governments, development partners and sports organizations. It offers a practical roadmap for leveraging sport as a catalyst for sustainable development, social innovation and long-term economic growth across Africa.
