Project overview

This project leverages the mobilising power of basketball to address gender inequalities and health challenges affecting girls and young women in rural Rwanda. In a post-genocide context marked by persistent gender norms and limited access to services, the initiative combines regular basketball practice with education on gender equality, mental and sexual health, and economic empowerment.

Basketball serves as both a safe space and a gateway to information, confidence-building and leadership development, while engaging boys, families and communities in challenging harmful norms and promoting inclusion.

  • Empower girls and women through access to regular basketball practice and leadership spaces.
  • Reduce gender inequalities through education and community-wide awareness activities.
  • Improve awareness of mental, reproductive and sexual health among youth.
  • Strengthen economic autonomy and employability of young women.
