Overview

GirlSkate Nairobi is a grassroots collective based in Nairobi, Kenya, dedicated to empowering girls and gender-diverse youth from underserved communities through skateboarding, music, and creative expression. The organization creates safe, inclusive environments where young people can build physical confidence, develop their creative identities, and foster a sense of belonging. Over 100 participants have already joined the movement, many stepping on a skateboard for the first time. As the initiative grows, its next phase focuses on preparing African women skaters for international competitions — including the 2026 Olympic Games in Senegal — by offering more structured training, visibility, and long-term athletic development.

Vision

The project envisions a future in which girls and women in Kenya have access to high-quality training pathways, well-equipped and gender-inclusive skateparks, dedicated mentorship, and opportunities for athletic and creative growth. Central objectives include strengthening coaching systems, expanding access to safe skate infrastructure, elevating African skate stories, building partnerships with federations and sporting institutions, and advocating for the official recognition of skateboarding as a developmental sport within Kenya’s national framework.

Program Components

  • Professional Training & Coaching: GirlSkate Nairobi offers weekly progression-focused sessions and intensive training camps designed to support both beginners and advanced skaters. Sessions are guided by certified coaches, athlete mentors, and local creative leaders who help participants build technical skills, discipline, confidence, and long-term athletic resilience.
  • Skate Infrastructure & Gear Access: The initiative promotes the development of gender-inclusive skateparks and mobilizes equipment donations to ensure that young skaters have access to boards, protective gear, and high-quality facilities. Mobile skateparks are deployed to underserved neighborhoods, removing geographic and financial barriers to participation.
  • Community & Leadership Development: Beyond sports, the program cultivates leadership and personal growth through youth-led dialogue forums, community mentorship, mental health sessions, and creative storytelling workshops. These activities encourage self-expression, belonging, and community ownership, while strengthening participants’ social and emotional well-being.
  • Global Exposure & Storytelling: GirlSkate Nairobi invests in documenting and celebrating African skate culture through media production, photography, and film. It facilitates regional exchange programs, builds alliances with Olympic committees and sport federations, and collaborates with international brands and creative networks. These efforts aim to amplify local talent, increase opportunities for African women skaters, and bring global visibility to East Africa’s rapidly growing skate movement.

Impact Goals

By 2026, the program aims to:

  • Train more than 300 girls and gender-diverse youth across Nairobi and surrounding regions.
  • Prepare at least five women athletes to compete internationally.
  • Build or rehabilitate two gender-inclusive skateparks.
  • Launch a digital archive dedicated to African skate stories, culture, and community voices.
  • Facilitate involvement in global sport and cultural events.
  • Advocate nationally for skateboarding to be recognized as a key youth empowerment and development tool.
