Peace, justice and strong institutions
This CASE-funded research highlights sport’s strong social impact, particularly in health, crime reduction, social capital, and education. This review explore a large scope of literature including case studies, impact evaluation, economic evaluation, randomized control trials etc. Sport improves physical and mental health, especially for older adults, despite some injury risks. It is linked to lower crime rates, reducing recidivism and juvenile delinquency, though some studies note ties to violence and underage drinking. Sport also strengthens social capital, fostering community engagement and reducing social tensions, though some clubs may reinforce exclusion. In education, sport boosts self-esteem, cognitive skills, and academic performance, though some groups may see negative effects. Overall, sport’s multiple benefits make it a cost-effective intervention that enhances wellbeing and social cohesion.
