Substance has prepared a Social Return on Investment (SROI) report to highlight the benefits of rugby in Scotland for the period from April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024. The analysis quantifies the social change created by rugby, including economic, social, and health benefits. Data was gathered from over 1,600 participants and 60% of member clubs. The total value of rugby participation was estimated at £159.16 million, with £13.46 million from economic, £41.2 million from social, and £103.31 million from health benefits. The largest contributions came from volunteering (£31 million) and wellbeing (£92 million). The subjective wellbeing benefit, which accounts for over half of the value, highlights rugby’s role in providing enjoyment and social engagement. However, the healthcare system incurred over £500,000 in injury costs. With an annual expenditure of £20.6 million, the SROI ratio is £1:7.71, meaning for every £1 spent, £7.71 of social value is generated.
