Sport England commissioned the Sport Industry Research Centre to assess the social, financial, and economic impact of sport and physical activity in England using a Social Return on Investment (SROI) framework. The research focused on participation and volunteering, excluding watching sports, and identified 16 key social outcomes, including health, individual development, and community benefits. The Base Model found that £71.61bn of social value was generated from £21.85bn of inputs in 2017/18, with an SROI value of 3.28, meaning £3.28 of social impact for every £1 invested. The largest value came from mental wellbeing (£41.76bn) and social capital (£19.97bn). The Forecast Model projected that 500,000 more active people would generate £1.06bn in additional social value, bringing the total to £72.67bn. The study suggests the true social value is likely higher due to the exclusion of some outcomes with limited evidence.
