Sport New Zealand Ihi Aotearoa commissioned an SROI study to assess the social impact of recreational physical activity in New Zealand. This report measured the Social Return on Investment (SROI) of recreational physical activity in Aotearoa New Zealand, commissioned by Sport NZ. It found that recreational activity provides significant social value beyond traditional economic measures, spanning health, wellbeing, income, work, family, and safety. The SROI valued nine outcomes at $16.8 billion, with health contributing $9 billion, accounting for 53.6% of the total value. For every $1 invested, $2.12 in social value is generated. The study also highlighted the value of recreational activity for Māori, strengthening relationships and cultural values. While both monetized and non-monetized outcomes were presented, further research is needed to fully recognize the broader impact of recreational physical activity.
