Co-published by the French Development Agency (AFD), the World Bank, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA), this book explores how sport can contribute to economic growth, social inclusion, and human development across Africa.
The publication shows that sport is far more than a recreational or competitive activity. It is a strategic tool capable of addressing major challenges across the African continent, particularly in health, education, employment, and social cohesion. Drawing on original data and field research, the authors highlight the largely untapped economic potential of Africa’s sports sector. Investments in infrastructure, events, equipment, and sport-related services could generate jobs and stimulate entrepreneurship. The report also emphasizes sport’s contribution to human capital development, youth inclusion, women’s empowerment, and reduced inequalities. At the same time, it identifies persistent challenges, including limited infrastructure, governance constraints, and unequal access to participation. The study concludes with practical recommendations to help governments and development partners position sport as a catalyst for sustainable development, especially in the lead-up to the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
