In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and FIFA have decided to join forces to launch a call for projects specifically aimed at financing “Sport and Health” themed initiatives in Africa.

General overview

Against the backdrop of the global health crisis and the social and economic impacts arising from it, the Sport en Commun (Sport in Common) platform and the Sport & Development programme of the NGO La Guilde Européenne du Raid (hereinafter, “the European Guild”) have linked up to launch a call for “Sport and Health” projects, co-financed by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
Sport is an important tool for the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular Goal 3 on good health and well-being. The aim is to provide support and financing for projects that use sport to prevent and cure physical and psychological illnesses in Africa.

Main themes of eligible projects

  • Sport and nutrition
  • Sport and access to healthcare
  • Sport and protection against epidemics (COVID-19, malaria, Ebola, HIV, etc.)
  • Sport and addressing chronic diseases
  • Sport and sex education courses (pregnancy, early marriage, STDs, etc.)
  • Sport and hygiene education
  • Sport and psychological support/follow-up and (re)appropriation of the body post-trauma
  • Sport and tackling the use of psychoactive substances
  • Sport and combating practices that are harmful to mental and physical health
  • Sport and inclusion of persons with disabilities
  • Sport for older persons
  • Any other theme connecting sport and health


Key information on the benefits of the call for projects

  • Financing ranging from €20,000 to €40,000 per project (in the form of a grant)
  • Ongoing support via personalised advice on the project methodology and application for funding
  • Comprehensive training on managing a development microproject or specific training on the theme of sport and development
  • Monitoring and evaluation of funded projects
  • Contact with stakeholders in the world of sport and development


Eligibility criteria

  • The call for projects is open to African organisations (associations, foundations, local and regional authorities, companies, sports clubs, federations, economic and community interest groups, National Olympic Committees, cooperatives, government structures, public bodies, other registered groups) and to French associations and foundations
  • The candidate organisation must have been registered for at least two years
  • The organisation’s annual resources must not exceed €500,000
  • Candidate French associations or foundations must implement their project in partnership with a local structure
  • The project must be carried out in Africa. All 54 countries are eligible, apart from the red zones defined by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs
  • The project must have a period of implementation of between one and three years
  • The project must use sport as a tool for health and well-being
  • The funding granted must not exceed 75% of the overall budget for the project excluding in-kind contributions



Candidate organisations may only present one application for funding to the call for “Sport and Health” projects, which will follow a two-stage process:
– Stage 1: Eligibility
– Stage 2: Applications for funding

Stage 1 – Eligibility
Any organisation that wishes to apply for the call for projects must first register on the Sport en Commun platform and complete the eligibility form by midnight (CET) on Thursday, 10 September 2020.
Only applications pre-selected during Stage 1 will proceed to Stage 2 of the call for projects.

Stage 2 – Applications for funding
Once pre-selected, completed applications for funding must be submitted via the European Guild’s Sport & Development proposal platform ( as soon as notification is received from the Sport en Commun teams. The closing date for submitting applications for funding is midnight (CET) on Monday, 12 October 2020.
The results will be announced by Monday, 30 November 2020 at the latest.
