In July 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the French Development Agency (AFD) and FIFA joined forces to fund “Sport and Health” initiatives in Africa.

The management of this call for projects was entrusted to Sport en Commun and La Guilde (through its Sport & Development program), which organised the selection of these projects in two phases: a project eligibility phase, and an in-depth phase on the quality of the projects.

The final selection committee took place on November 25 and brought together teams from the AFD, FIFA, La Guilde, Sport en Commun, the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, as well as external experts. Together, they selected 14 winners* from 12 English, French and Portuguese speaking countries! Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya and Senegal are the countries most represented in this selection.

These projects use soccer, multisports, basketball, rugby, boxing or wrestling as a tool for the good health and well-being of the beneficiaries and more particularly as a tool for sexual health education (pregnancies and early marriages, STDs, STIs), the flagship theme of this call for projects.

The envelope of funds distributed amounts to €435,000, i.e. an average funding of €31,000 per project.
