A project managed by the Côte d’Ivoire Ministry of Sport

The Côte d’Ivoire Ministry of Sport and Leisure oversees the implementation and monitoring of government sports policy. It is responsible for encouraging participation in elite and grassroots sport and promoting and monitoring public and private sports facilities.
Inaugurated on October 3rd and renamed "Alassane Ouattara Stadium", the Ebimpé Olympic stadium is a modern, multipurpose complex to the north of Abidjan. It is part of a comprehensive project for the construction and operation of the Ebimpé Olympic village. With capacity for 60,000 seats, it will host various international sporting and cultural events.

Context

In December 2016, the Government of Côte d’Ivoire began construction works on a 287-hectare Olympic village to the north of Abidjan. This modern sports and leisure complex is part of the Government’s plan to use sport to foster the sustainable economic development and growth of the city of Anyama (Ebimpé) and the surrounding areas.
The focal point of the Olympic village, the Ebimpé national stadium, was completed in May 2020 and will host several matches in the 34th Africa Cup of Nations in 2023. 

Goals

  • Strengthen the position of Côte d’Ivoire as a regional and international destination for tourism and sport
  • Prepare for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and other sporting and cultural events
  • Make participation in sports more accessible in Côte d’Ivoire
  • Foster the sustainability of venues to the benefit of local communities and ensure the region’s economic prosperity

 

Activities

  • Building of a national Olympic stadium to host sporting and cultural events
  • Construction of an Olympic village: four residential estates, three school sports groups, a university of sport, an administrative area, a shopping area, a clinic, a four-star hotel and a nine-hole golf course
  • Establishment of a 10,000-seat multipurpose hall, the Basketball Club Arena, for elite team sports and combat sports

 

Impacts

  • Promotion of sports participation in Côte d’Ivoire
  • Olympic village built in the context of a sustainable city for the long-term development of the city of Anyama and its surrounding areas, with new sports, school, hospitality, retail and medical facilities
  • Discovery of new talent and monitoring of athletes in professional settings
  • More than 1,500 direct jobs created in the city for the construction of the complex

 

Funding

  • Project cost: around €108 million
  • National Olympic Stadium financed through a public-private partnership involving EximBank China
