Outreach programme about the dangers of abusive use of substance in Pikounda (Congo)

Context

In Congo, the problem of selling and using drugs has always been a concern for public authorities and for organisations working to promote youngsters’ well-being. The situation, which was already worrisome with natural drugs, has got a lot worse with the introduction of synthetic drug consumption.

In Pikounda District, located in the north of Congo, young people aged 16 to 30 indulge in the consumption of such drugs as quetramadol, diazepam, valium without a doctor’s prescription for increased feel. Several cases of sudden deaths, infarction, mental disorders, suicides, homicides, early and undesired pregnancies have been recorded.

The association therefore engages into an extensive outreach programme against this plague by using football’s mobilising power. 

Objectives

• Informing, educating and communicating on the dangers posed by the substances both on their users’ health and on the risks for the society
• Sensitising on the selling and the abusive use of substances
• Keeping youngsters busy promoting sound initiatives for improved health care and daily living
• Building a multifunctional youth centre that is going to host several sporting and developmental activities in favour of the young

Activities

• Holding the second edition of the «Renaissance Cup» football tournament
• Launching an awareness campaign against the selling, trafficking and abusive use of substances
• Launching the construction of the “Youth Centre”

Impacts

• The 200 young girls and boys from the 8 participating teams of the football tournament
• 75 % of these direct beneficiaries are inhabitants of Pikounda and Sangha most of whom are former drug users or sellers.
• 500 indirect beneficiaries consisting of relatives, people from Pikounda as well as associations and other organisations that may utilise the Youth Centre for various actions for the benefit of the population.
