Ukhuselo Lwa-Bantwana Edu-Sport
Context
While South Africa has shown some improvements in ensuring access to education, early Childhood Development and protective workshops, some marginalised young people still do not have safer spaces for sports activities. In South Africa, there are roughly 5 million children under the age of 5 and half of these children don’t have any form of out of home learning experience according to the foundation.
In this context, various stakeholders including the civil society, local schools, Department of Education, Department of Agriculture and Department of Sports and traditional leadership are engaged alongside the foundation for the construction of the Ukhuselo Lwa-Bantwana Edu-Sport in in Ngqushwa local municipality.
Goals
- Provide a safe space for sport activities with quality after-school programmes for youth
- Contribute to accumulative societal change through life skills, learning, entrepreneurship, Sport and development
- Facilitate regular and ongoing attendance at safe hub activities
- Use non-formal, informal educational techniques to impart skills and knowledge through netball, football and cricket
- Help and develop children cognitively, physically, socially and emotionally.
- Facilitate regular Safe Hub early childhood development programmes in safe, enabling environment
Activities
- Quality after-school programmes for all groups, on skills development, sport and development and job creation, while having entrepreneurship components
- Integration of the fourth industrial revolution in their programmes, the facility is providing free Wi-Fi and internet services
- The safe hub will also be used to test drive cars assembled during robotics competition among local primary schools.
Target impacts
- 40 Jobs created for unemployed youths
- 1000 children using the safe hub to practice sports activities
- Youth between the ages of 5 and 25 years
- 60% of girls and 40% of boys
- 9000 youths and children will be reached through programme activities
Funding
The total budget for the project is estimated to c.€174,762 (mainly development costs of the programme, administrative costs, personnel costs, equipment etc), of which €29,127 is financed by the association.
The remaining amount to be financed is €145,635.
