Empowering girls and women through skateboarding
Context
Depression is a serious issue for young women in Ghana. There are many contributory factors: low levels of education, lack of employment, debt, social and professional exclusion and domestic violence. Furthermore, women’s participation in sport is limited. Despite the growing number of skateboarders, the country still does not have a dedicated infrastructure or specialist coaching for the sport. Some 90% of open urban areas are unsuitable for skateboarding, and sports facilities are virtually non-existent.
The Surf Ghana collective and Board Spirit Marseille have joined forces to foster the empowerment of Ghanaian women and girls through skateboarding.
Goals
- Promote and facilitate skateboarding by girls and women
- Develop a coaching structure to better monitor participants’ performances
- Establish a training programme for careers related to skateboarding

- Professional training sessions with insights into the various careers associated with skateboarding, such as photography, coaching, filmmaking, judging and skateboard equipment design
- Follow-up support for women skateboarders
