TIFU, programme for the emancipation of teenage girls through football

Context

In the framework of its activities on social innovation through sport, TIBU Morocco places great importance to the role women play in its activities and programmes focused on education, social inclusion and professional integration through sport.

Women and little girls have been specially affected by the health crisis that has hit hard throughout the world: an increased number of abuses, job losses, increased household mental load following confinement, lower self-esteem, nearly no physical activity.

This situation has led the TIBU Morocco team to initiate a programme centred on teenage girls’ emancipation via football in rural areas, especially in Ouled-Saleh in the Casablanca-Settat province.

Objectives

• Giving young girls from rural areas access to an educational programme through sport and helping them adopt a healthy lifestyle for a healthy passage from infancy into adolescence
• Fighting the lower self-esteem the young girls are suffering from and debunking the stereotypes around sport and gender
• Empowering girls, restoring their confidence in their own capacities and encouraging them to take more initiatives
• Creating positive experiences around football with young girls so as to help them reach their full potential

Activities

• Assisting the beneficiaries achieve good school results as a way of reducing the number of school drop-outs
• Starting the programme for girls’ emancipation through football by staging 3 weekly sessions at the public primary school Dar Sahraoui in the Ouled-Saleh rural area in the vicinity of Casablanca
• Vulnerable groups’ mobilisation and sensitisation and planning the implementing phase

Impacts

• Supporting 100 (a hundred) 8 to 12 year-old girls’ from vulnerable families in the Ouled-Saleh rural area chosen according to the following criteria: 20% of them who have reached academic excellence; 20% who have good physical condition; 30% who have a lack of discipline; 30% who failed school
• 210 indirect beneficiaries consisting of: 100 benefiting families; 100 girl friends in the direct beneficiaries’ neighbourhood; 10 members of the primary school where the centre is located
• Over 70% of TIBU members consisting of 20 to 33 years old youngsters shall benefit from job opportunities.
