Project supported by IM Youth Foundation

Impact Youth Foundation is a non-profit developmental sports organisation established in August 2018 and focussed on children, teenagers and young adults in the poorer rural and urban communities of Ghana. Its vision consists in supporting rural community youngsters so as to achieve an economic and social impact in Ghana.
The Impact Makers' programme is an extracurricular initiative using sport as a medium for health education and vocational capacity building for Shai-Osudoku District's youngsters. After impacting over 165 teenagers in 2018, the objective is to reach 500 youngsters in three new schools in the district through activities based on the IMPACT model (Inspire, Mentor, Provide, Applaud, Character, Transform).

Context

Despite a 31 % increase of the human development index in Ghana over the last few years, more than 73% of the young live in poor conditions and have to cope with unemployment, poverty, early pregnancies, addiction to drugs and/or substances, alcoholism and a shortage of high-quality education. The district has indeed, recorded 520 pregnancies in 2019, 105 of which ending in unsupervised abortions and causing the death, a frightening fact, of a number of teenage girls whose futures have been undermined. Drug and substance abuse and alcoholism are also a concern in the district among youngsters aged 15 to 16. A big number of young male addicts and alcoholics have finally become school drop-outs looking for low-paid to earn a living and keep their lifestyles.

In such a context, Impact Youth Foundation is committed to working with the local authorities and bringing economic and social changes into Shai-Osudoku District using this sporting initiative focused on a health (physical, mental and gender) training and on access to any vocational formation opportunities.

Objectives

  • Providing structured and fun activities that will positively mobilise the young and reduce both the social vices and challenges they face.
  • Endowing the young with skills and knowledge conducive to qualification and employability
  • Providing job opportunities through sport and volunteering
  • Fostering partnerships for a sustained growth and influencing long-term policies

Activities

  • Training workshops for young coaches and mentors into “Impact Makers” methods and mobilisation of active agents of change acting as ambassadors in the various targeted schools
  • Practice and initiation sessions in football, basketball, volleyball, etc. in favour of the young
  • Workshops and sensitisation campaigns on health education, STIs, early pregnancies, drug and substance abuse, etc.
  • Periodical organisation of community sport camps capable of hosting over 110 youngsters (55% males and 45% females) and establishment of interschool tournaments and contests
  • Training the young on vocational skills and creation of opportunities to foster their employability

Impacts

  • Over 651 teenage and young boys and girls (10 to 20 year-olds) in the district shall be engaged in extra-curricular (training in sexual health) and sporting (football, basketball, volleyball and table tennis) activities
  • Youngsters over 15, in particular women, shall participate in a training programme in sports and daily life skills and shall be sent to various communities and schools in their community to work as coaches and mentors
  • 40 % decrease in the number of unwanted pregnancies among teenage girls in the district’s basic schools by 2023
  • Better study completion rates, increased participation of girls in collective sports and increased engagement of the young in the district’s sustainable development.
