Project supported by Djarama association

The DJARAMA association was created in 2005 in Senegal by the actress Patricia Gomis. Its aim is to promote access to culture for children, particularly the most disadvantaged.
"DJARAMA" is a project to build sports facilities in the town of Toubab Dialaw in Senegal. The aim is to promote the positive values of sport and to foster the well-being of young people.

Context

According to the National Agency for Statistics and Demography, the unemployment rate in the last quarter of 2021 is estimated at 24.1%. Unemployment is much higher in rural areas where the rate is estimated at 29.8% compared to 19.1% in urban areas. In rural areas such as Toubab Dialaw, fishing is the main source of income for the population. However, overfishing and environmental degradation hinder the practice of this activity.  The vulnerability of certain sections of the population, such as young people, is thus reinforced, particularly in a post-covid context.

The Djarama project therefore aims to improve the condition of young people through sport

Objectives

  • Promoting access to sport for young people
  • Strengthen the physical and social skills of children through mixed training in basketball, volleyball and handball
  • To develop young people’s knowledge of less represented sports and of the challenges of sustainable development

Activities

  • Construction of a multi-sport field
  • Recruitment, registration and training of youth training teams
  • Organisation of weekly training sessions for team ball sports and alternative individual sports
  • Holding of summer camps and Olympics day
  • Renting out the field and infrastructure to external persons and institutions

Impact

  • 260 children and young people will be able to improve their physical skills on a regular basis
  • 240 young people will be introduced to sports
  • These young people will improve their knowledge of their rights and of sustainable development in solidarity
