Tingathe Development Forum

A project supported by Tingathe Development Forum

Tingathe Development Forum (TIDEF) is a community-based organisation in Malawi. It was set up in 2012 to help vulnerable young people, orphans and children in Nkhotakota District through prevention and awareness-raising programmes.
The project consists of creating safe, accessible spaces for sport for vulnerable children aged 10 to 18 living in Nkhotakota District. It also develops sports-based awareness-raising programmes focusing on sexual health, respect for human rights, the risks and realities of HIV/AIDS, early pregnancy, and child, forced marriage.

Context

According to a demographic health survey in Malawi, young people in Nkhotakota District are increasingly vulnerable to social and health problems. Boys often engage in illegal drug use, leading to an increase in criminality, while girls are at risk of early marriage and pregnancy. Between 2018 and 2020, a total of 530 girls aged 14 to 17 became pregnant: 78% of them were living in the rural areas of Nkhotakota District. Girls are victims of harmful cultural beliefs and inactivity. They also have high prevalence rates for HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Against this backdrop, TIDEF works to protect young people by encouraging communities, families and local stakeholders to take part in sports activities, training, and awareness-raising workshops.

Goals

  • Establish safe spaces for sports practice to reduce inactivity among the area’s young people
  • Train volunteer teachers and young local football and netball coaches in TIDEF’s awareness-raising programmes
  • Raise awareness among parents of the risks of girls’ early marriage in marginalised rural areas of Nkhotakota District
  • Contribute to reducing the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and other STIs among the population
