Project supported by the Côte d'Ivoire's Rugby Federation

Côte d'Ivoire's Rugby Federation is the Rugby Union's governing body in Côte d'Ivoire. Founded in 1961, it affiliated to the "International Rugby Board" in 1988. Its objects are to organise, encourage, develop and boost the practice of rugby sevens, rugby league and any other type of rugby enforcing the rules of the game set by the IRB.
Covering a year-long period, the MEDI’SEPT programme is an IRF initiative consisting in staging rugby tournaments in 12 targeted localities in Côte d'Ivoire. The teams shall consist of 7 players (females and males) aged 8 to 16 competing in a safe environment also suitable to sensitisation and health education.

Context

Chronic diseases represent 102,900 deaths in 2016 hat is 30% of the premature deaths in Côte d’Ivoire. The rates of the overweight population have been sharply increasing since the 2010s and the risk factor causing non transmissible pathologies (NTDs) is mainly physical inactivity. In such a context characterised by the Covid-19 pandemic, the people most exposed are the ones suffering from a chronic disease or from a disease that weakens their immune system (notably with a history of cardiovascular, diabetes and obesity, sickle cell anaemia onslaughts, etc.).

So as to help reduce any mortality rate in connection with these chronic diseases, the RIF has engaged into a  support process with the populations by using the values of the sport it promotes to propose enthusiasts and families health prevention actions and actions to battle inequalities. It aims at using the sport’s universality to promote social and human development in Côte d’Ivoire.

  • Popularising rugby sevens and safeguarding the practice among children with health care
  • Proposing preventive actions from chronic diseases to people at risk and youngsters
