Play4Health

Context

According to the UNO, Cameroon is the 150^th country out of 189 in the HDI, the human development index comparing the quality of life and prosperity prospects of the populations from various countries. Since the «anglophone crisis» of 2016, the living conditions and infrastructures in the anglophone provinces of Cameroon have further deteriorated thereby undermining the well-being of the more vulnerable. Transmissible infectious diseases, and notably HIV/AIDS, malaria, respiratory infections and diarrhoea, have indeed become increasingly recurrent and have been the main causes of deaths in the country. This Open Field initiative is based on the power of sport to promote health and the more vulnerable populations’ lives in the poorer and under-developed areas of the South-West and North-West of Cameroon.

Objectives

• Training coaches, referees and local football fans to become community health advisors
• Promoting health and well-being through sensitisation
• Preventing bad injuries, physical and mental trauma within the sporting facilities built for the young.
• Converting football pitches into safe places for attaining the Sustainable Development Goals
• Sustaining the initiative to encourage other stakeholders (public authorities, the private sector) in Cameroon to invest into sport and the well-being of the populations

Activities

• Purchasing the necessary equipment, including first aid kits, football gear and providing study programmes and related learning equipment
• Training coaches, referees and local football fans (mostly women and youngsters) into “Play4Health” methods.
• Training workshops on transmissible diseases, sensitisation and prevention methods, teenage health education and decision-making, first aid to prevent injuries on a football pitch, etc.
• Organising “Play4Health” football tournaments along with vast sensitisation and educational campaigns on transmissible diseases in Cameroon in partnership with health organisations and local media groups

Impacts

• 64 coaches and/or community leaders from three cities (Kumba, Mamfe and Bamenda) shall take a course with the objective of becoming community health advisors
• Over 1,280 youths shall be directly impacted, and thousands of others in an indirect way through the sharing of information at events and during a more extensive sensitisation campaign in partnership with local television and radio stations
• Improving awareness raising on health, preventing diseases, and treating injuries properly in the sporting areas of two provinces of Cameroon, by paying more attention to the young players and populations’ health and well-being.
