Project supported by Ascent Soccer

Established in 2014, Ascent Soccer is an organisation with a social impact operating in both Malawi and Uganda, engaged in promoting systemic change and equality in sport and in society with children.
Using the power of football and a safe area for the girls, the project provides a unique platform of communal education for the promotion of the girls' health by means of participative educational interactive sessions in Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu. The programme will be covering a four-month period in 2021, including school spring and summer breaks so as to mobilise the vulnerable children of Malawi.

Context

According to UNICEF, 70 % of the population of Malawi and 63 % of the children live below the poverty line. Most of the children have unsatisfied basic needs that are essential to their development, including access to quality education, health care, nutrition, drinking water and hygiene resources. Besides, with over a million HIV/AIDS orphan children, Malawi is one of  countries worst-hit by the  disease.

So do cultural norms maintain rigid gender roles affecting disproportionately girls and women in terms of access to education, high exposition to HIV/AIDS and early and forced marriages. Nearly 47% of the young marry before they are 18 and 29% are victims of early pregnancies.
