Project supported by La Maison du Rugby

Established in March 2010, la Maison du Rugby (Rugby's Home) is a Senegalese non-profit association specialised in young people's protection through the promotion of a sport embodying important educational values, rugby. Its reception centre is open first and foremost to the 7 to 17 years old young people.
The project consists in supporting 200 young members of the Maison du Rugby in their education and their learning of rugby.

Context

The results of the General Census of Population and Habitat, Agriculture and Livestock (2013) indicate that 51% of the Senegalese population is under the age of 18. This youth is a challenge in terms of education and employment. In the town of Yoff, a fishing village located within Dakar, families are often in a precarious social and economic situation.

Because of their economic activity, parents are not able to follow their children in socio-educational and health terms. The latter have little access to quality sports and educational infrastructure and have limited future prospects.

La Maison du Rugby wanted to respond to this lack to avoid some societal scourges such as school dropouts, social perdition (street children for example). It provides girls and boys with educational support and social health monitoring through sport.

Objectives

  • Ensure the educational, social, health and sports development of the 200 members of  La Maison du Rugby
  • Ensure the sustainability of La Maison du Rugby by launching a revenue-generating activity
  • Strengthen the operational capacities of  La Maison du Rugby through exchanges of practices and training of professionals

Activities

  • Schooling for all members of La Maison du Rugby
  • Social follow-up of children by a social worker
  • School support activities, learning about sports and their values (rugby, boxing, swimming)
  • Vocational training for members who are failing at school

Impact

  • 100% of the children will be enrolled in school, and will master the rules of rugby
  • Children who participate in regular training will integrate the values of rugby
  • 100% of young people enrolled in vocational training will be graduates
  • At least 1 player of playing age is selected for the national team or a Senegalese club
