A project supported by Community Health Education Sports Initiative Zambia

Founded in 2009, CHESIZ is an NGO working in the areas of education, health, sports and good governance in Zambia. The organisation supports women and young people aged 13 to 25 by creating an enabling environment for their personal development, empowerment and autonomy within the community.
The project focuses on educating young people and women in the district of Kabwe about the risks associated with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and viruses (HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, etc.). The project's sports programmes aim to empower women, protect children and offer assistance to people living with incurable diseases.

Context

With a population of some 261,000 inhabitants, most of them young people and women, the mining area of Kabwe in Zambia is facing rising unemployment and increasing poverty. Many young people are at risk of sexual abuse and STDs. Just 40% of young people aged 15 to 19 practise safe sex with a condom.

CHESIZ is committed to supporting the most vulnerable and marginalised groups in the community through sport by means of specific programmes aimed at social awareness-raising and encouraging economic empowerment.

Goals

  • Use sport to unite young people and women in order to form an alliance against the spread of HIV/AIDS
  • Reduce risk-taking among young people and women through preventive education and awareness-raising
  • Create an environment conducive to caring for people infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS
  • Improve the self-confidence of young people and girls so that they can better manage the stress and trauma of sexual violence
  • Raise public awareness of measures to prevent COVID-19 and reduce its negative impacts on community life
  • Foster the economic empowerment of young people and women

Activities

  • Training Peer Leaders and coaches in CHESIZ’s special programmes for broad dissemination within their respective communities
  • Holding life-skills training sessions in schools and communities to support the capacity-building of local populations
  • Organising two festivals (involving football, netball and basketball) during which education and awareness-raising sessions are held on HIV/AIDS and STDs, early/child marriage and gender equality

Impacts

  • 2,000 girls and 4,000 boys have participated in life-skills events and benefited from education and awareness-raising sessions
  • 120 Peer Leaders aged 18 to 25 have been trained in CHESIZ’s methodologies and programmes in order to organise and supervise activities in their respective communities
