Project supported by Golden Boots

Golden Boots Uganda aims to empower young people to build resilience, and secure their future through sport, and make them becoming future change agents in their communities. This NGO targets the most vulnerable people living in the slums of Kampala.
This project aims to organise sport activities and workshops addressed at young people with experts and sport icons to raise awareness about mental health issues and increase access to the support services available. The total cost of the project is estimated at €27 000.

Context

With c. 46m inhabitants in 2020, Uganda has the youngest population in the world with 77% of its population under 25.

The pandemic has heightened existing social issues such as discrimination, stigma, poverty, unemployment, gender-based violence, and depression. These issues exacerbated by COVID-19 has a huge impact on mental health, notably for young people.

 

Objectives

  • Use sport to raise awareness on mental health issues
  • Increase awareness about the support services available
  • Open conversations on mental health topics with young people
  • Foster the uses of medical support for young people facing mental issues

 

Activities

  • Inclusive football activities
  • Mental health workshops
  • Awareness and training sessions involving mental health experts
  • Mental health experience sharing

 

Impacts

  • 500 young people will be empowered to overcome COVID-19 negative impacts
  • Adoption of a positive attitude about mental health
  • Increased access to counselling and mental health facilities
