Youth fulfilment through football

Context

The 2001 Act of law on children authorises all children to have free access to basic education in Kenya. However, the children from the marginalised areas of Migori and Kisumu are largely excluded on account of poverty and income disparity. Children are faced with manpower exploitation in the gold mines and.along the Lake Victoria shores. This considerably increases the number of school dropouts, sexual abuses and bad school results. Likewise, the minister of education has allotted vast playgrounds to public state schools, mainly because of the high number of students in the public schools. These pitches are mainly underused and underfunded. Additionally, there isn’t enough quality coaching, regular practice or equipment in football academies to command active adoption of the game.

The project shall have community actors participate proactively to eliminate any obstacles to education and promote child protection within the households and in the community.

Objectives

• Promoting game-based learning and access to quality education for the children and youths of Kisumu and Migori counties, thereby helping to achieve SDGs 3 and 4.
• Promoting children and youngsters’ admission, keeping in school and transition to schools in the targeted communities over the course of the first year
• Fostering talent development and basic competence-based learning for 250 children and youths in 4 partner schools over the course of the first year
• Reinforcing the procedures and policies for child protection in the 4 partner schools by promoting capacity building and partnerships between the community schools over the course of the first year

Activities

• Consultation and planning meetings with at least 50 actors, including school heads, volunteer coaches, the children and educational officers, local authorities, local football clubs in Kisumu and Migori counties
• Training volunteer educators about the relevant tools for managing quality football club academies and organising fun activities for the young
• Two annual sensitisation forums with 200 parents on children’s rights and the elimination of the obstacles to children’s access to education
• Purchasing and distributing football equipment and other basic items
• Weekly practice and play-based learning sessions to convey daily life skills, positive comportment, resilience and fitness

Impacts

• 250 youngsters (150 boys and 100 girls) aged 8 to 18 shall be registered into the 4 public schools of Migori and Kisumu counties
• 50 educators and 10 volunteers in community health shall be selected and given some training
• The indirect beneficiaries shall be 1,000 people at least and include the contacts and student, educator, parent and volunteer coach networks.
• 200 parents shall be the indirect beneficiaries. Similarly, every impacted child shall have an impact on about 5 other students, probably their classmates or friends from other classrooms or schools.
