Dakar Diamniadio Sports City : an innovative sports complex
Context
As part of the second implementation phase of the Emerging Senegal Plan, the new urban centre of Diamniadio is a symbol of the country’s economic ambitions and momentum. Located some 30 kilometers from the capital, Dakar, Diamniadio is positioned as a fast-growing administrative and industrial hub for a variety of activities.
Dakar Diamniadio Sports City (DDSC) will meet international standards and offer a wide range of facilities. It will also contribute to the well-being of the local community and enhance the new city’s attractiveness to a wider public, in particular businesses and professional and amateur athletes.
The DDSC will have tennis courts, an athletics track, an Olympic-size swimming pool, a children’s playground, a first-class fitness suite, a medical sports centre, multisport halls, 7-a-side half-pitches (Maracana), combat sports gyms, a wellness area (spa, hammam), a FIFA-standard football pitch and a professional training centre.
Goals
- Participate in the development of the new urban centre of Diamniadio
- Make participation in sport more broadly accessible in Senegal
- Offer a broad and diverse range of professional sports and recreational activities
- Create a sustainable ecosystem of direct and indirect employment
- Achieve construction target of 24 months for its scheduled completion in 2022
Activities
- State-of-the-art multisport complex in the West African sub-region
- Facilities meet both international standards for high-level sport and the needs of amateur athletes
- Realising the “Work, Live and Play” concept through the construction of an athletes’ residence, a four-star hotel (jointly managed with the American group, Marriott), restaurants and sports equipment shops

Impacts
- Positioning Senegal as a sports and events hub capable of hosting sports delegations and sports competitions beyond the 2022 Youth Olympic Games, which have now been postponed to 2026
- Infrastructure built in the context of a sustainable city
- Facilities that benefit both school and professional ecosystems
- Creation of at least 250 direct jobs to service the multisport complex
Funding
- Project cost : approximately €50 million
- Project financed through equity contributions (approximately 25%) and bank loans (from a consortium led by the West African Development Bank (BOAD) with the involvement of two local banks, the National Bank for Economic Development (BNDE) and Banque Atlantique Sénégal)
