A project managed by Terres en Mêlées

Terres en Mêlées is a NGO that aims to improve education through rugby and offers environmental education to children who live in some of the most marginalised regions in Burkina Faso, France, Madagascar, Morocco and Togo.

In partnership with Malagasy Rugby

Malagasy Rugby, Madagascar’s rugby federation, is dedicated to the promotion, administration and development of the sport on the island.
In partnership with Malagasy Rugby and the Government of Madagascar, Terres en Mêlées has been using rugby as a tool for education and national solidarity in Madagascar since 2014. It currently conducts activities in 17 of the island’s regions for thousands of girls and boys.

Context

Reducing poverty and ensuring access to education are major challenges in Madagascar. Terres en Mêlées launched its Child & Development project in the southwest of the island in 2014, in partnership with Malagasy Rugby and the Madagascan Ministry of Education. The objective of the project is threefold: to establish a programme of education through sport; to raise young people’s awareness of sustainable development issues; and to conduct information campaigns on health and hygiene at schools, using rugby to teach the values of life.

After the success of this first project, which reached over 35,000 children and introduced 400 teachers to the Terres en Mêlées methodology, the organisation extended its activities throughout Madagascar. This involved setting up Rugby Academies (provincial training centres), holding the first national schools’ rugby championship and organising Raid FADA cultural exchanges as well as several solidarity activities between French and Madagascan schools and rugby clubs.
