Building a multisport centre for seniors and children at Mitsoudje
Context
In the Comoros, a growing number of people have been suffering from CVAs and diabetes since 2015, reveals a survey carried out by NGO « Sante Diabète ». Indeed, the rate of prevalence of Comorian diabetes is 4.8%. Mitsoudjé’s health centre, covering Hambou’s two communes, recorded a 125% increase of CVAs among people over 35, between 2018 and 2019. The number of evacuations for cardiovascular disorders was twice as many over the same period, from 50 in 2017 to 96 in 2019. This situation is partly due to a sedentary way of life caused by a lack of sports facilities suitable for the area.
The association therefore undertakes to build a centre for practising sports to improve the target population’s general health. In line with the Government and its 2030 Emergent Comoros Plan, the project shall help make big strides towards achieving SDG 3 on health and well-being, using sport.
Objectives
- Help build an enclosed facility for the people of Mitsoudjé to practise physical exercise and facilitate the practice of sport by vulnerable people.
- Sensitise people by launching an information and communication campaign on the usefulness of physical exercise In checking back non transmissible chronic diseases
- Fight seniors’ inactivity and indirectly the onset of such diseases as diabetes, CVAs, etc.
Activities
- Building an enclosed sports centre and fitting it with the necessary equipment for practising various sports (basketball, volleyball, handball, etc.)
- Holding lectures and awareness tours about the dangers and risks of sedentariness and how it promotes the onset of chronic diseases
Impacts
- All the inhabitants of the Hambou Province spread out in 10 villages namely over 20,000 people who benefit from the project. 58% of them being vulnerable people
