Construction of the Jays Sports Academy
Context
In Uganda, 40% of girls are married before their 18th birthday and one in 10 is married before the age of 15 as reported by Girls not brides (2017). According to UNICEF, Uganda has the sixteenth highest prevalence rate of child marriage in the world and the tenth highest absolute number of child brides globally. According to the survey conducted by NeFCoRD in August 2020 in Kasese district, Uganda, 1,005 adolescents have been impregnated during the lockdown.
It is in this context that NeFCoRD intends to create, the Jays Sports academy (JSA) in pursuing its zeal to transform the lives of the youth and adolescents in engaging them in various games such as football, basketball, athletics and other games.
Objectives
- To create a community and sustainable academy in order to develop football, basketball, and athletics
- To empower the youth with on hand vocational skills at the academy that will help them earn income for themselves through self-employment
- To identify and develop sports talents in young people and give them a chance of making a career even away from the academy
- To engage young people in physical and moral education with a view to reducing crime rate, drug abuse, teenage pregnancies as well as the fight against HIV/AIDS
- To train young people in the sustainable management of bio-diversities and environmental protection
- To build friendship ties with stakeholders as well as other sports-oriented entities
Activities

Impact
- Trainees or junior and senior footballers are trained and equipped with basic material
- The training activities will encourage the spirit of competition and especially self-challenge in all participants
- The coming together of young people from all part of the country will foster friendship ties and encourage national integration that is indispensable in national unity and nation building
- Reduction of teenage pregnancies and early marriages in Kasese district
Funding
The total budget of the project is €120,000.
