A project managed by Surf Ghana

Established in 2016, Surf Ghana is a collective of surfers and skateboarders whose main objective is to promote and encourage participation in skateboarding and surfing in Ghana and around Africa.

A project managed by Board Spirit Marseille

Board Spirit Marseille is an accredited youth sports non-profit association in France. Certified as a French Skateboard School, the association is affiliated to the French Federation of Roller Skating and Skateboard and the Skateboard Commission. BSM runs a development project in Ghana aimed at promoting social integration through skateboarding.
The Surf Ghana collective and Board Spirit Marseille have joined forces to foster the empowerment of Ghanaian women and girls through skateboarding. The two organisations work together to hold introductory skateboarding courses for young women aged under 25 and offer vocational training for careers in the skateboarding industry.

Context

Depression is a serious issue for young women in Ghana. There are many contributory factors: low levels of education, lack of employment, debt, social and professional exclusion and domestic violence. Furthermore, women’s participation in sport is limited. Despite the growing number of skateboarders, the country still does not have a dedicated infrastructure or specialist coaching for the sport. Some 90% of open urban areas are unsuitable for skateboarding, and sports facilities are virtually non-existent.

The Surf Ghana collective and Board Spirit Marseille have joined forces to foster the empowerment of Ghanaian women and girls through skateboarding.
