Environmental preservation through sport
Project supported by Angaza Sports and Development Centre
Founded in 2009, Angaza Sports and Development Centre (ASDC) is a NGO promoting community and youth development in the counties of Nairobi and Kiambu in Kenya. The organisation works to promote several Sustainable Development Goals through football practice.
The project aims to sensitize the youth in Kenya on environmental preservation using sports and particularly local sporting events. The 3,500 youth involved in the project will participate in sport activities and benefit from workshops on environment, gender equality and leadership.
Context
Thika (Kenya) is an industrial town that suffers from massive environmental degradation: lack of proper drainage systems, poor waste management, water shortage, poor tree cover. The areas of Kiandutu, Kiganjo, Wetheithye and Makongeni are particularly affected by environmental issues.
In the slum of Kiandutu, the population live in precarious housing made of mud, tin cans and iron. As there are no play areas in the neighbourhood, children play near wastewater, exposing them to a number of diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid and respiratory tract infections.
Goals
- Promote environmental preservation
- Promote gender equality by encouraging more girls to participate in organised activities
- Train 25 community coaches and 15 school teachers on play based methodology incorporating environmental and gender sensibilisation
Activities
- Organisation of weekly tournaments
- Training for coaches and mentors
- Organisation of litter-picking sessions and reforestation schemes
- Organisation of workshops on the WASH method through a digital communication campaign
- Organisation of weekly handball sessions in 5 schools to promote gender equality and environmental conservation
Impact
- 3,500 people will benefit from the programme
- Communities will benefit from a healthy living environment
- Gender discrimination will be reduced
- 25 coaches and 15 mentors will be able to raise awareness through sport
