The executive council of the Francophone Africa Special People Games was created in 2016 to organize sport competitions, leisure activities and cultural events for people with disabilities in Africa

The CIFSAC is an association founded in 2016 to develop para-sport in Francophone Africa through the organisation of sport competitions, trainings and advocacy campaigns towards governments and institutions.
The JPSAF and CIFSAC are joining forces to organise the first edition of the Francophonie Games for people with disability from the 5th to the 10th of September 2022 in Yaounde, Cameroon.

Context

The para-sport movement struggles to grow in Francophone Africa due to the lack of para-sport federations and hence lack of competitions promoting adapted sport. The weak democratisation of para-sport in Francophone Africa is illustrated by the absence of Francophone African countries on the medals ranking of the last Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.

Beyond Olympic medals, sport is an essential tool for education and social inclusion, and this weak para-sport development stalls social inclusion for persons with disabilities.

The organisation of these games would help developing para-sport in participant countries to perform better at the next Paralympic Games, but mainly to democratise the practice of sport for all persons with disabilities.

Objectives

  • Democratise the practice of sport for all persons with disabilities, for competition or leisure notably through advocacy towards government and families
  • Increase the number of para-sport competitions and involve every order of disability
  • Improve the performance of para-sport athletes from Francophone Africa

Activities

  • Organisation of trainings for supervisors and technical staff who will participate in the games
  • Organisation of the multisport competition (athletics, wheelchair basketball, goalball, 7 football, powerlifting) for each disability order on six days
  • Organisation of awareness raising campaigns for disabled people inclusion in society

Funding

The total cost of the project is €237,143.
