Highway of Hope
Context
In Kenya, girls are less likely to participate in sports since sports are largely dominated by men. According to Global Human Development report (2013), the main causes are poverty, heavy domestic demands, safety concerns, lack of accessible transportation, inadequate sports and recreational facilities, few opportunities for physical education and skills development frequently limit girls’ participation in sports.
In this context, Centre for Transforming Mission (CTM), in partnership with Global Youth Initiative (GYI), uses sports as a viable vehicle and crucial tool for girls/women empowerment to address gender equity in a broader scale.
CTM collaborates with public and private schools to use their available spaces for infrastructure development as part of the deployment of this initiative in the slums of Kibera.
