The Education Access and Retention of Children through Playdagogy (AMEP) project aims to strengthen access to quality education and tackle early school leaving in 15 municipalities in Burundi. Since 2016, more than 15,000 children have benefited from the project.

Context

Since 2008, PLAY International has been working with vulnerable communities to promote access to quality education. In 2016, the NGO launched its AMEP programme, which seeks to facilitate children’s access to school and ensure their continued attendance in 15 municipalities across eight provinces in Burundi and to bridge the gap between formal and informal education.

Goals

  • Strengthen children’s non-formal education through the provision of social and sports activities in 15 youth centres
  • Promote inclusive education by raising awareness among children and teaching staff about the importance of schooling and the need to tackle discriminatory behaviour
  • Inform teachers, local communities and young people about the use of sports for educational purposes

Activities

  • Training 60 Playdagogy activity leaders
  • Implementing Playdagogy in 15 youth centres throughout Burundi
  • Raising awareness among teachers of how sport can be used as an educational tool and as a means of tackling early school leaving
  • Partnership with Bibliothèques Sans Frontières (Libraries Without Borders) to promote access to resources and carry out awareness-raising activities in three youth centres
