A project managed by A Human Rainbow

The French organisation A Human Rainbow aims to assist people in developing countries through microprojects covering five areas: education, health, food, living conditions, and sports and leisure.

A project managed by Kibera Black Stars

Founded in 1987, the Kibera Black Stars Football Club is based in Kibera, a well-known slum in Nairobi. After successive promotions, the club now plays in the second-tier National Super League, with its sights set firmly on reaching the Kenyan Premier League.
In Kenya, A Human Rainbow is supporting the construction of multipurpose facilities for community use on an empty plot of land in the Kibera slum. The site will be used as the headquarters of the Kibera Black Stars, the renowned local football team.

Context

Overcrowding, poor hygiene, pollution, high unemployment, limited access to decent education, high rates of alcohol and drug abuse – the living conditions in Kibera, Kenya’s largest slum, are extremely tough.

Despite this difficult context, the Kibera Black Stars football team is a real model of success for the slum’s residents. The club is growing and pursuing its ascent towards the Kenyan top-flight but needs a headquarters in order to be able to stay in the second tier of the league. The Kibera Black Stars are taking advantage of the construction of their headquarters to provide multipurpose spaces for children (access to education), women (workshops) and residents (social, cultural and leisure activities).

Goals

  • Use sport as a vehicle for social inclusion
  • Support education in a difficult environment
  • Establish income-generating activities for the slum’s residents
  • Give young people a sense of responsibility and keep them away from bad influences
  • Improve the sanitary environment and raise awareness of sustainable development

Activities

  • Construction of a multipurpose structure (sport and leisure)
  • Introduction of homework assistance, language courses and sports training
  • Sewing activities for the women of Kibera
  • Local library and toy library, internet cafes
  • Childcare and cooking area
  • Implementing recycling and installing solar panels
