Overcoming Disability through Sport
Project supported by FISMA
Located in Abidjan, the Ivorian Federation of Sports for the Visually Impaired (FISMA) was established in 2015 with a view to developing and promoting sport for visually impaired people in Côte d'Ivoire.
The "Overcoming Disability through Sport" project supported by FISMA aims to promote the socio-economic integration of young people with visual disabilities.
Context
The 2014 General Census of Population and Housing (RGPH) estimates the number of visually impaired people in Côte d’Ivoire at over 69,825. This segment of the population has limited access to education, economic opportunities and political decision-making.
In order to fight against the socio-economic exclusion of these people, the FISMA association intends to set up its project entitled “Overcoming disability through sport”. The programme uses sport as a tool to promote equality and diversity.
Goals
- To contribute to the well-being and health of young blind illiterates
- To ensure the effective participation of 100 young blind illiterate people in sport
- To promote the socio-economic integration of these young blind illiterates through the practice of sport
- To train young blind illiterates on gender equality and their rights
Activities
- Medical visits
- Initiation to sport through identifying sessions of new blind talents (men and women)
- Organisation of technical capacity building seminars
- Organisation of pedagogical training
Impact
- 100 illiterate blind youth between the ages of 10 and 35 are integrated into Federation clubs and play high-level sport
- 100 illiterate young blind people aged 10 to 35 will adopt a healthy lifestyle
- 100 illiterate blind youth will live on the income from their work
- 100 illiterate blind youth are now informed about gender equality and their rights
