An innovative vision of education through sport

Context

Senegal is characterised by an ever-increasing and young population (55% of them under 20). But the social infrastructures are insufficient, causing limited access to basic services (school, health care, leisure, etc.). Yoff Town, formerly a fishermen’s community in Dakar, has been hard hit by such deficiencies: according to la Maison du Rugby, in just 10 years, the population has doubled but infrastructures have followed suit. Indeed, classrooms are overcrowded (67 students per class), deteriorating learning conditions and encouraging school drop-outs. Few leisure places are provided for the households, most of them being private and out of reach to the poorer populations. The priority for parents in a difficult situation is seeking food, at the expense of their children who are not looked after. Responding to the lack of social facilities, la Maison du Rugby stands therefore as an indispensable alternative for the often poor Yoff households as regards their children’s school, health, nutritional, extracurricular and more generally educational monitoring.

Objectives

• Contributing to the social inclusion and school and/or professional success of 150 vulnerable children and youngsters (females and males), by relying on the values of rugby, in the prospects of reaching SDGs 3, 4, 5 et 10.
• Maintaining children in the educational system and reinforcing their educational level
• Assisting the young in getting vocational training
• Promoting the hosted children and youngsters’ personal development and civic integration thanks to a sporting practice
• Helping 150 children and youngsters and their families accede to health care

Activities

• Organising 3 weakly practice sessions, 4 monthly contests and 2 annual olympiads with hearty snacks given out before and after each session
• Annual compulsory medical examinations, total payment of the fees (visits, examinations and care) for the poorer ones and providing insurance to all (wounds and/or accidents)
• Initiation to the computer and provision of a tutoring class in French, in mathematics and in English
• A course in personal development
• (Total or partial) payment of the youngsters’ tuition and transport fees
• Assistance in vocational insertion
• Awareness raising workshops on civics and hygiene and training for instructors and MCs

Impacts

• 150 (a hundred and fifty) 7- to 17-year-old youngsters (75 females and 75 males) from poor and vulnerable families in Dakar Province, shall be profiting from this project
• Over 50 youngsters trained each year and integrated into the socio-economic fabric
