Sport as a tool to prevent crime and drug abuse
Context
Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with one of the youngest populations in the world. Young people make up 43% of its population and according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC 2017), about 40% of them use illicit substances.
Through its programme, ANOC mobilises young people in the practice of several sports activities in order to reduce school dropout rates, drug addiction and crime.
Objectives
- Promote good health and a healthy lifestyle among Nigerian youth and prevent drug use
- Promote gender equality by involving girls to a greater extent in different activities and by sensitising men on gender-based violence
- Promote peace by reducing violence among youth and creating a more conducive environment for their development
Activities
- Physical and sports activities (football, basketball, tennis) to develop the self-confidence of young boys and girls
- Awareness seminars for teachers, on how sport can be used as an educational and preventive tool against early school leaving
- Workshops on gender issues, equality and awareness raising sessions on violence against women and girls
- Training and capacity building of managers in the organisation of sports events
Impact
- Improved skills and knowledge of 500 youth on crime, violence and drug use
- Reduced crime and substance abuse
- Increase in the practice of sports by young people to promote their personal development
