Sports for local communities
Context
A 2017 Youth Talent Foundation survey revealed that sports extended to local communities of Mubende district would help create solutions to reduce the high levels of unemployment, non-communicable diseases and gender equality. This would demand establishment of sports centres to create safe spaces to encourage young people enrol and change the perspective of sports from being a leisure activity to a professional job career.
A few civil society organisations (less than 2%) in Uganda have tried to tackle youth issues with sports maintaining the problem of limited access to local sporting programmes for Youth development. There’s a need to improve sports to increase more African engagement in sports on the world wide scale, competing various games and increase of sports centres.
In this, Youth Talent Foundation through the “Sports for local communities” is working with the local-out-side school communities to secure some educational benefits for the talented youths and young children improving and promoting community sporting to boost education, health, economic wellbeing of youths in Uganda.
Goals
- Promoting sports as a career among youth and increasing their participation in regional, national and international events for volunteer and employment opportunities
- Using sports to promote peace, justice and health.
- Developing two net ball sport centres with sporting equipment to enable youths have recreation and improve physical fitness.
- To keep youths in school using sports
- Providing employment to youths
Activities
- Training of local players the basics netball rules
- Skilling players to help them acquire employment
- Training support personnel such local coaches to help in local teams
- Alcohol and drug abuse free youth campaigns to create awareness in youths that drug abuse is dangerous to talent
- Career guidance services in schools to help students to have good future decisions
Target impacts
- 70 female direct beneficiaries as players belonging to 10 netball teams
- 49 male direct beneficiaries as players belonging to 7 male net ball teams
- 4 improved areas especially where the games and centres where the activities will take place
- 180 indirect beneficiaries especially business owners, government, technical staff
- 13 trained sports personnel such as amperes, coaches
