Unified Women’s Football for Health, Mutual Aid and Equity
Context
In Senegal, according to a study from Handicap International, people with disabilities face important obstacles to access health and education services or employment. The inclusion of children with disabilities in the educative system is an essential development challenge in Senegal where around 35% of children from 7 to 16 years old have a disability (2013 census). Among them, 66% are not registered in a school programme.
Objectives
- Improve the health and well-being of children, notably young girls with and without intellectual disabilities
- Help them acquire information on health and knowledge on their rights
- Reduce inequalities
- Extend inclusive sports practice
- Educate participants about their health
Activities
- Organisation of a unified football tournament
- Discussion sessions on the benefits of sport and inclusion
- Gynecological and diabetes screening
- Workshops on violence against women, early marriages, early pregnancies and excisions
- Prevention against sexual transmissible infections
Impacts
- 120 children with disabilities will gain knowledge on their rights, notably related to sexuality and early marriage
- Acquirement of means to defend themselves against abuse and physical and sexual violence
- Education about personal hygiene and hygiene rules for a healthy environment
