A project managed by Promo Jeune Basket

The association Promo Jeune Basket was created in 2006 by young Belgium-educated Congolese university graduates to promote the development of youth and citizenship through sport and high-level academic training.

With six sites in and around the Goma region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Promo Jeune Basket academy organises basketball training sessions for young people, drawing on the key values of discipline, team spirit, respect and responsible citizenship.

Context

Goma, a city on the border with Rwanda, has been at the centre of civil wars in the region. The city has a population of more than 1 million people, almost half of whom are refugees.
To make matters worse, Goma was devastated in 2002 by the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano and the region remains the epicentre of endless rebellions.
By offering young people the chance to acquire essential life skills through basketball and by placing them at the heart of community development, Promo Jeune Basket has become a key player in the region.

Goals

  • Promote life values among Goma’s young people through basketball practice
  • Mobilise young people and improve the quality of education
  • Develop the autonomy, perseverance, discipline, teamwork and responsible citizenship of young future leaders

Activities

  • Building training grounds and providing equipment
  • Holding regular basketball camps (for girls and boys aged 4 to 18)
  • Organising sessions for young persons with disabilities
  • Recruiting and training qualified coaches and teachers
  • Awarding annual educational scholarships
