Project supported by Training4Changes

Located in Stellenbosch, "Training4Changes" (T4C) was established in 2013 and has now become a world leader in using futsal for the South African population's well-being. In 2019, T4C became the first African organisation to receive the Coaches Across Continents accreditation.
This Traning4Changes initiative is a programme for the training of 100 coaches focused on mental health care, psychological first aid, emotional literacy, response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and hygiene education. Over 2,500 youths from 10 South African communities shall be impacted over time.

Context

According to a 2019 poll carried out by Training4Changes in South Africa, 100 % of the people surveyed declared being affected by negative childhood experiences, including domestic violence and negligence.  For the South African Depression and Anxiety Group, 1 out of every 6 South Africans suffers from anxiety, depression or drug or substance abuse. Nearly 75 % of the sick get no health care or support. The mental health resources and infrastructures are totally insufficient for coping with the heavy burden. For this reason, the South African government has admitted the pressing need to equip community workers, including coaches, so they can provide a first line of support.

In this context, CAC and T4C have joined forces in view of consolidating the works they have doing since 2015.

Objectives

  • Providing the coaches and the young with emotional literacy skills so that they can help one another and understand how to make emotions work for rather than against them
  • Equipping the coaches so they can form the first line of support in mental health care and creating safety areas for the treatment of trauma
  • Sensitising youngsters on the best practices for evolving in a context of pandemics and providing them with new skills to build their mental resilience

Activities

  • Selecting coaches and training them on CAC methods and programmes that lay the emphasis on mental health care, psychological first aid, the response to COVID-19, hygiene education, etc.
  • Building safety areas for social inclusion and holistic care thanks to daily sporting, educational and fun sessions
  • # againstALLodds campaign giving girls opportunities to play futsal, promoting gender equality and the empowerment of girls and young women

Impacts

  • 2,500 youths shall be enjoying support and an outreach programme on physical and psychological traumas, on hygiene and transmissible infections
  • 100 coaches trained according to “Coaches Across Continents” methods and programmes
  • Over 10 communities, beginning with the Cape’s big province and far beyond in South Africa
  • Over 8,580 indirect beneficiaries indirect including nearly 800 elderly people shall be impacted by the project’s young participants and coaches
