A project managed by Fútbol Más

The association Fútbol Más (Football Plus) strives to build happier and more resilient communities around the world. Currently active in more than nine countries, it has developed a proven methodology based on social and sports activities to create safe spaces for recreation in highly vulnerable communities.
The project carried out by Fútbol Más consists of developing the professional and social skills of teachers in the province of Sofala (located in the centre-east of Mozambique) through the adoption of a socio-sport methodology for children and young people in the region. This methodology is based on the promotion of well-being, the strengthening of resilience and social cohesion within communities. The total budget of the project is estimated at €55,000 over a period of 1 year.

Context

Impacted by various scourges in recent years (notably the COVID-19 pandemic and Cyclone Eloise), the Mozambican people have been deprived of a large part of their livelihood. Furthermore, despite the government’s actions to develop the education sector – including waiving some school fees, providing direct support to schools, offering free textbooks to young people and investing in the construction of new classrooms – the situation in the sector remains worrying.

A 2014 World Bank survey indicated that only 1% of primary school teachers had the minimum knowledge required to perform their duties, and only one in four teachers could perform two-digit subtraction. Absenteeism among teachers was estimated at 45%, and absenteeism among school principals at 44%.

Through its initiative, Fútbol Más wants to train teachers and facilitators to use its sociosports education programme to strengthen their skills and develop their teaching strategies with students.

Objectives

  • Empower and train 140 teachers from schools in the province of Sofala in the Sport for Development programme developed by Fútbol Más
  • Transfer social-sport tools for teachers that encourage the active participation of children and youth
  • Improve the education of young people and reducing truancy

Activities

  • Diagnosis and identification of gaps and needs within the province’s education system in selected schools
  • Recognition of schools, identification of social dynamics and academic and social actors involved in academic activities
  • Integration of the Fútbol Más methodology in the teachers’ programme
  • Training of teachers and facilitators in the methodology developed by Fútbol Más
  • Training of teachers on classroom strategies to develop concepts such as gender equality, inclusion, and social cohesion

Impact

  • Improvement of teachers’ skills
  • Improving the quality of education in the province
  • Approximately 6,000 children impacted by the socio-sportive methodology
